What is a good age to start piano lessons?
All children are different, so there’s not one set age. Some children are ready at 4 1/2, others are ready at six or seven years. A great sign that your child is ready for private, one on one piano lessons is that day can sit and do a work sheet, read a book or assemble a puzzle, staying on task for at least 15 minutes.
Why is the piano the best instrument to learn first?
It is immensely beneficial to learn the piano as a first instrument because it is the only instrument on which a student can actually see the notes. Creating music on all other instruments involves a finger position or holding down a string. The piano is extremely visual. The piano reads both the treble and bass cleffs, so piano students can immediately transfer their knowledge to any other instrument. All instruments play the same rhythms so learning note, values and counting, is immediately transferable to all other musical instruments. Everything a child learns on the piano is 100% transferable to any other instrument. The reverse is not true.
What is a good age to start violin, viola, or cello lessons?
we recommend at least six years old and here’s why. A very young child is capable of playing violin, however, the amount of time, energy, effort, and money involved does not yield great results unless the parent is it accomplished string player, and can enforce daily, diligent practicing. The physical act of holding the violin correctly and proper bow technique takes a lot of practice. It is much, much better to start on piano and then ad for switch to strings after a year or two of lessons.
Do we have to own a piano to take lessons? Can we start on a keyboard?
Yes, your students must have an instrument to practice on every day. When exploring instruments, it is quite a commitment to spend money on a large, heavy “piece of furniture”. Electric keyboards are a great place to start to see if your child has interest and the motivation to play. We recommend a keyboard with at least 72 weighted, touch sensitive keys. The goal the first year of piano is to cultivate a love of making music. If that can be accomplished by starting on a keyboard, great! Your teacher can offer advice on purchasing an acoustic piano when you’re ready. Used pianos abound and are often found at great prices!

The guitar is a fabulously popular instrument, and everybody wants to play it! Because producing sound on the guitar requires having a hand large enough to reach around the neck and fingers long enough to push down correctly on the strings, we recommend a student be at least six years old.

The ukulele is a great instrument to play in preparation for guitar lessons. The ukulele’s 4 strings are the top for strings on the guitar. (The guitar has six strings, even 12 for more advanced players, ) Everything a student learns on the ukulele is immediately transferable to the guitar.
